The Blue Streak Scholarship Fund, a grassroots organization dedicated to fundraising for the Jubilee Schools, has been in existence since 2003 and has donated over $1.5 million in support of students throughout Memphis. The organization began when several supporters of Catholic schools sat down together and decided they could be doing more to break the cycle of poverty through their support of excellent educational options.
Since then, Blue Streak has raised money through online donations, scholarship captains, events like the Annual Taste of Jubilee, and good old-fashioned word of mouth. This year’s Taste of Jubilee event changed venues (moving to Minglewood after years at the Pink Palace Museum), but still boasted one of the highest attendances to date with over 800 tickets sold. It was also the best funded with sponsorships raising over $100,000. This led to Blue Streak’s largest single-year donation ever: $175,000. It was a great way to end the 2015-2016 fiscal year and played a big role in Jubilee reaching its $1.9 million goal. With this year’s annual fund goal an even higher $2.5 million, Blue Streak is ready to ramp up its fundraising efforts and continue growing the family of Jubilee supporters.
This year, Blue Streak is adding two new events to increase donations to and awareness of the Jubilee School’s mission. On October 8, the Memphis Catholic athletic fields will be covered with tents, grills, fryers and smokers as Blue Streak launches its first hot wing competition and festival. Competition entry is $150 per team. For those feeling less competitive, sponsorship opportunities are also still available. The festival begins at 11:00 and ends at 6:00 and will include live music, games, and of course, lots of chicken wings!
